Press the DN key on the keypad to highlight [MODEVAT] and press the MENU button to enter the options. The selection PPM should be highlighted. (Even though PPM is highlighted, the Turnigy9X still requires a PPM encoder to communicate with the Pixhawk flight control.....please don't ask us why...because we don't know!) If not, use the UP or DN keys on the keypad to select PPM. Press the MENU button to save and exit.
Using the DN key on the keypad select [STICK SET] and press the MENU button to enter the options for this selection. Here is where we can set the sticks on the transmitter to a mode of our preference. In MODE 1 the throttle will be set to the right stick in MODE 2 the throttle will be set to the left stick. In Europe MODE 1 is more commonly used and in North America MODE 2 is more commonly used. But it doesn't really matter because what it comes down to is personal preference. In our example we will set this to MODE 2. To do this use the DN key on the keypad to highlight MODE 2 (below photo) and press the MENU button to save and exit. If you prefer MODE 1 you can just press the MENU button. Once you press the MENU button you will be asked the following question, "THRO REVERSE?" This means that you now have the option to change the direction of full throttle on the throttle stick. However, you are not given any options in this screen to do that and you have to go over to the FUNC SETTINGS menu and choose [REVERSE]. Don't worry about this right now, we will do that after we are done with the current menu selections, so just press the MENU button once again to save and exit.
Using the DN key on the keypad select [COPY] and press the MENU button (above photo). On the left side of the screen we have the source mode and on the right side of the screen we have the target mode. The target mode is what will become the active default each time the transmitter is turned on, so we want to copy our new settings to the target. Using the "+" and "-" keys on the keypad scroll through each mode until you see the name of your new settings (second line on the left). If you don't see the name of your new settings that means that the new settings were not saved (the buggy thing we mentioned earlier) and you will have to go back to the [MODE NAME] option. When the new name of your settings appears as a selection (left side of the screen). Press the UP button to highlight the target, and press the "+" key on the keypad until the target is MODE 1 TURNIGY, this is the default. By doing this, your new settings will become the default settings when the transmitter is turned on.
When the copy is successful, the screen will display the message, "Please wait...", followed by a single beep. You can now use the EXIT button to return to the main menu and then the default welcome screen. At the default menu screen you will now see your new settings displayed as the active default settings to be used when the transmitter is turned on (photo below). To test this, turn off the transmitter and turn it back on and if all was done correctly your new setting name will be displayed along with the "ACRO" or airplane icon. When your new settings name has become the default on the welcome screen, your Turnigy9X radio is ready to communicate with the Pixhawk flight controller!
If for some reason you ever want to reset the entire transmitter to the default factory settings, simply hold down the EXIT button at the same time that you turn on the transmitter, when the "RESTORE...", message appears release the EXIT button and the entire transmitter will reset to the original settings. However, be sure that you want to do a system reset because any other previous settings will also be reset!
Setting Reverse Throttle
If your preference is to reverse your full throttle so that the stick position is opposite (down for full throttle or up for full throttle). Use the UP or DN keys on the keypad to highlight the FUNC SETTING (wrench and screwdriver icon).
Press the MENU button again and the first highlighted selection will be [REVERSE] (below photo). To enter the options for this selection press the MENU button once again.
Using the DN button, scroll down to THR (which stands for throttle) and then press the "+" key on the keypad to change the throttle from normal to reverse. Press the MENU button to save and exit to the previous screen. In reverse mode full throttle will now be all the way down instead of all the way up. Press the EXIT button twice to return to the welcome screen.
